Background

Award-winning jazz vocalist Yenting Lo released The 13th Heron, an album inspired by the Apollo 13 mission, an ambitious journey toward the moon that faced unexpected setbacks and questioned the meaning of the voyage itself. Lo invited me to visually interpret one of her central tracks, the biggest challenge was how to express the album’s ambition within a single music video, while also capturing its poetic and philosophical depth through a narrative of exploration and uncertainty.

Concept

The video tells the story of a heron gazing at the moon, longing for something beyond its ordinary world. It sets off on a difficult journey through space, facing meteor showers and cosmic storms, in search of a new horizon. The ending is left open: did it return, did it reach the moon, or did it find no difference? The core idea of the song reflects on the moon always hiding one side, if a mark is engraved there but no one can ever see it, does it truly exist? The film extends this thought into a broader question: if a journey ends in the same place as it began, does the journey still hold meaning?

Impact

The album received two nominations at the 2021 Golden Indie Music Awards, Best Jazz Album and Best Jazz Tune for “Engraved in the Moon”, and later earned a Silver Medal at the 2024 Global Music Awards. It continued to gain international visibility with showcases in SXSW Sydney and Taiwan Beats in 2024–2025. The video established a clear visual language for the album’s space‑journey concept, translating its abstract ambition into a tangible narrative. This strong visual storytelling reinforced the album’s identity and contributed to its recognition across both music and design communities

The Film

Color & Mood board

We deconstructed the lyrics, discussing the meaning behind each verse and the emotions she wanted to convey. These emotions were then translated into corresponding color palettes, forming a visual board that guided the mood and tone of the video.

Develop Process

Our initial design of the heron was more realistic and detailed.
To keep the visuals from overshadowing the music, we simplified the style, giving the heron a cleaner, more geometric form.

The scene design was initially detailed, but later evolved into a simpler, more geometric style.
